When you're training your dog, you're going to want to keep a fairly strict system of reward and punishment so that they know what's good and they know what's bad. Not only that, but the way that we're going to tell you to train your dog is going to also teach your new little guy or gal a few tricks along the way.
Alright, so we're mainly going to discuss potty training puppies in this article, as it gets the point across the most effectively.
1) First, you must teach them what not to do.
If you want to train your dog properly to not use the bathroom in the house, whenever he or she uses it, rub their nose in it. It sounds kind of cruel and odd, however, they quickly get the point that they should not be using the bathroom in the house. This mostly only works if you rub their nose in it immediately after they do it.
2) Second, you must teach them what to do.
Train them to want to go outside when they have to use the bathroom. My dog knows to scratch on the door when she wants to use the bathroom. It's juts an automatic thing.
3) Finally, reward them for doing the right thing.
After they use the bathroom outside, give them a dog treat when they come back in. This re-enforces the good behavior and they will want to do it again, and will also want to use the bathroom in the floor less and less.
